DESTINATIONS
You will find many websites with information while visiting Greece. The official website for Hellas is www.visitgreece.gr. Here is a sample of the many destinations a visitor can explore:

AEGINA
The Island Aegina is a great vacationing spot on its own, located just 17 miles from Athens. Transportation is very good from the port of Piraeus. The boat trip to Aegina Town takes only 40 minutes by Flying Dolphin. Tradition derives the name from Aegina, the mother of Aeacus, who was born in and ruled the island. During ancient times, Aegina was a rival to Athens, the great sea power of the era. Be sure to visit the Hellenic Wildlife Hospital and the church of Saint Nectarios.

PATMOS
Patmos is a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea. Patmos is mentioned in the Christian scriptural Book of Revelation. In 1999, the island's historic center Chora, along with the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse, were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

SANTORINI
The Island is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history. Swell sunsets, good local wine and fine restaurants. The signature site is the once-buried city of Akrotiri. The site gets extraordinarily hot - go early in the day - after making sure it is open.

CRETE
Crete has many interesting places to see. The Minoan Palace at Knossos is near the city of Heraklion and was built during the Bronze Age, or visit the natural wonders of Samaria Gorge. This easy-to-get-around island is a small paradise for locally made cheeses, olive oil, wine and many local restaurants.

EPIDAURUS
A relatively easy drive form Athens, the site of Epidaurus, on the Peloponnese Peninsula, was the most celebrated healing center of the ancient world. The Theatre is functional for plays to be regularly presented during the summer Epidaurus Festival, has unbelievable acoustics. Enjoy the small, good onsite museum. On your way, there's a great little village bakery in Adami.

MOUNT PARNASSOS
Mount Parnassos is a leading ski center resort in central Greece at 8,061 feet (2,457 meters) and is a bargain compared to most other places in Europe. Besides great skiing you can enjoy arms free, jump around and fun snowboarding. They also offer challenging trails, night skiing, ski school, lodges and rental shops. It is a very popular destination during the winter months as well as during the summer because of its location.
Just to the south of Parnassos is Delphi. After the Acropolis, Delphi is the most popular archaeological site and only 180 kilometers from Athens. Also in the slopes southeast of Parnassos is the picturesque small town of Arachova with very good accommodations, excellent hospitality and a fantastic view of the surrounding olive groves and the Gulf of Corinth to the south.

KARPENISI
Karpenisi (official page/Wikipedia page)(Battle of Karpenisi) is a town in central Greece known as the “little Switzerland of Greece.” It is the capital of the peripheral unit of Evrytania.

The area around Karpenisi is mountainous while farmlands are mainly in valley areas. Mount Tymfristos lies to the north at nearly 2,315 m elevation. Karpenisi has the Velouchi Ski Resort and several hotels with excellent views because of the surrounding mountains.

The food in the local family restaurants is slow cooked and with local ingredients. Pies in large round pans such as tyropites or kolokythopites (cheese or squash pies) are traditional foods in this part of the country. They are made with local cheese, greens or vegetables and homemade phyllo. These alone are worth the trip!
