GASTRONOMY: The Art & Science of Good Eating!

While in Greece, one will enjoy many types of flavorful and wholesome food. Some traditional foods include freshly caught seafood, feta cheese, olive oil, and a variety of bread from old-time bakeries. While many know the Mediterranean diet as delicious, it is also a healthy alternative to other heavier diets. The origins of good health can be traced back to the ancient Greeks Epicurus and Hippocrates. From the island of Kos (460-370 BC), Hippocrates is the founding father of modern medicine and is credited as the originator of the Hippocratic Oath, which essentially states “Do no harm.” It was his belief that the negative course of an ailment was caused by poor nutrition. His advice was, "Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food"–advice that, to this day, has not lost its validity. In fact it’s gaining momentum. If we take his advice seriously we can chip away at obesity.

This promotion of healthy eating habits was displayed in the ancient Greek temple of Apollo at Delphi. The inscription stated, “Meden Agan (μηδεν ἀγαν),” which mean, 'Nothing in Excess'. For instance, it is better to moderate one’s food consumption rather than overdo certain food groups. Most restaurants offer a good selection of healthy choices and will be glad to accommodate your dietary needs if you call in advance.

Eating in Greece is also a scenic experience as Greece has over 8,000 miles of coastal line with many restaurants and tavernas located by the sea. Often times, the islands have local ordinances restricting the use of cars, such as the island of Hydra, but these eateries are located within a pleasant walking distance. If one prefers to buy their own food, fast paced markets filled with meats, cheeses, and fresh seafood make for a fun experience.

While Greece is known for its food and great hospitality (philoxenia), it also offers an extensive array of Greek wines. Therefore, there are numerous boutique wineries that are sure to please any palate. As of late, Greece has become a major exporter of seafood especially the Lavraki or Mediterranean Sea bass known in the United States by different names Branzino (Italian) Lup de mer (French) etc. Lavraki is served in many upscale US restaurants and around the world. To your health (Στην υγεία σας)!
